MHNAUK meets in Glasgow

2019-10-11 09.56.32On Friday October 11th 2019 members of MHNAUK met at Unite the Union’s offices in Glasgow for a first meeting of the 2019-20 academic year, hosted by Dave Munday (Lead Professional Officer, Mental Health).

In his opening, Dave updated members on the work of Unite and the Mental Health Nurses Association, and encouraged colleagues to listen to, and to share, the new Unite/MHNA podcast.

Our first guest was Professor Lawrie Elliott, Editor of the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (JPMHN). Lawrie presented on the journal’s priorities and progress before joining members in a wide-ranging discussion on publishing practices, open access and opportunities to become involved in the work of the JPMHN.

David Thomson, Chair of the Mental Health Nursing Forum Scotland, was our second guest and led with an overview of Scottish mental health policy and services, nursing practice and education. In the discussion following members noted Scotland’s distinct approach to health care, including new legislation on safe staffing and the continuation of bursary support for students of nursing.

In the afternoon MHNAUK members shared developments in research, education, and policy and practice across the UK. Items discussed included #MHNR2019, the practice assessment of pre-registration students, advanced practice in mental health, the FutureMHN conference and REF2021.

Our next meeting takes place at the University of the West of England on Friday March 6th 2020.
